PHUKET — 29 May 2026, Lifeguards have reported the presence of Portuguese Man o’ War jellyfish on multiple beaches across Phuket, leading to cautionary advisories for visitors along the Andaman coast. The first sighting occurred on 28 May at Kata Noi beach in Karon subdistrict, where a lifeguard promptly erected warning signs along the shoreline.
Chaninton Nareepen, who is a lifeguard at Kata Noi, confirmed noticing the jellyfish on 28 May and took immediate action to alert beachgoers by placing signs throughout the area. In addition to Kata Noi, other locations such as Nai Harn beach, Yanui beach, and Racha Island have reported similar sightings, prompting local authorities to enhance monitoring efforts across these beaches.
Though it may appear like an ordinary jellyfish, the Portuguese Man o’ War is a highly venomous species that possesses long tentacles capable of delivering painful stings, even after the organism has washed ashore. Contact with this jellyfish can result in symptoms including intense burning pain, swelling, rashes, nausea, respiratory issues, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness or death.
Officials are urging anyone who encounters these creatures not to attempt to touch them. In the event of a sting, victims should rinse the affected area with seawater rather than fresh water and seek immediate medical assistance.
Tourists planning to visit beaches along the Andaman coast are strongly advised to stay alert for official warnings prior to swimming.
