This week, Thailand is bracing for heavy rainfall, which has raised alarms for flash floods, runoff, and hazardous sea conditions. Chayan Muangsong, the secretary-general of the Office of the National Water Resources, indicated that several provinces need close observation as the intense rainfall could lead to flooding. Among the regions identified as high-risk are Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phuket, and Krabi. Phuket, in particular, is deemed especially at risk due to its drainage systems potentially being overwhelmed by sustained heavy rain. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding strong south-westerly monsoon conditions, coupled with a monsoon trough that is expected to traverse upper Thailand, bringing extensive rainfall from May 31 to June 6. Forecasts suggest heavy to very heavy rain in parts of the East and along the Andaman coast, with some southern provinces anticipating rainfall covering up to 80% of the area. The department cautioned against possible flash floods, forest runoff, and overflowing waterways, especially in areas near hills and watercourses. Additionally, Bangkok and its neighboring provinces are expected to face thunderstorms affecting 60-70% of the region, with heavy rainfall expected in specific locations.
