Severe Weather Alerts Issued for Thailand Amidst Incoming Storms

BANGKOK — 14 May 2026, Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has released its third weather advisory on Thursday, warning of potential flash floods and forest runoff due to heavy to very heavy rainfall expected between 14 and 18 May.

According to Advisory No. 3 (63/2026), significant rainfall is anticipated in the northern, central, eastern, and southern regions of the country. This weather shift is linked to a robust low-pressure system over the lower Bay of Bengal, which is progressing towards the upper Bay of Bengal, along with an intensifying southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

Residents situated in flood-prone areas, especially those near foothills, waterways, and low-lying regions, are advised to stay vigilant for the possibility of flash floods and unexpected runoff due to the anticipated heavy rainfall.

The TMD has also issued warnings regarding rough sea conditions in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. From 15 to 18 May, wave heights in the Andaman Sea are projected to reach between 2 to 3 meters, with waves exceeding 3 meters in storm-affected areas. In the upper Gulf of Thailand, waves could reach around 2 meters and exceed that height during storms.

Mariners are urged to exercise caution and avoid navigating through regions where thunderstorms are present. Small vessels in the Andaman Sea are recommended to stay ashore while this warning is in effect.

For live updates, residents can visit the TMD’s official website at http://www.tmd.go.th or contact their 24-hour emergency hotlines at 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182.

The advisory was issued at 05:00 on Thursday, with the TMD indicating that the next update will follow at 17:00 on the same day.
