In a decisive move to reclaim state land, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin ordered the demolition of structures that have encroached upon Phuket’s Nui Beach. This directive follows numerous complaints about illegal occupation by powerful groups.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul had previously issued urgent instructions to investigate claims of encroachment on public land and to enhance beach access for both residents and tourists.
Minister Suchart emphasized that enforcement of the law would be prioritized, with plans to dismantle structures that have been unlawfully constructed on public land. This initiative addresses ongoing disputes concerning Freedom and Nui beaches, where investors are accused of occupying protected forest areas and imposing illegal entrance fees on visitors.
Court rulings from 2018 to 2024 have confirmed these violations; however, some groups continue to occupy the land despite legal repercussions. Suchart noted that he has mandated relevant agencies to rigorously enforce laws against encroachment in Phuket, particularly invoking Section 25 to remove illegal structures from protected regions.
Furthermore, the ministry aims to rehabilitate these areas into recreational forests that will be accessible to both locals and tourists. Suchart mentioned that cooperation with local leaders and communities would be essential in restoring affected sites and developing them into sustainable tourist attractions for both Thai citizens and international visitors.
Concerns regarding the safety of officials investigating land encroachment were raised by Chalermpong Saengdee, the People’s Party MP for Phuket. He reported threats allegedly made by local influential figures following his inquiries into illegal activities in beach areas.
Chalermpong expressed that armed intimidation against forestry officials and threatening social media posts have instilled fear among residents and government employees. He also referenced menacing online comments aimed at him, which suggested low bail amounts for potential attacks on MPs.
Recently, he filed objections against bail requests for individuals accused of forest encroachment and intimidation, urging the Prime Minister to tackle encroachment issues around Freedom and Nui beaches as well as delays in public transport projects and the Khao Khad grazing reserve.
