A UK tourist, Janelle Brown, has issued a warning for travelers after receiving a fine for parking in a manner she deemed unfamiliar while in Thailand. The incident occurred when she parked her vehicle against the curb near a beach, leading to a fine of £52 due to her car not facing the correct direction, a rule she was unaware of prior to being penalized.
Janelle expressed her confusion regarding the fine, stating, “I was confused as to why I was fined.” Upon seeking clarification, she was informed that the regulation exists but is rarely enforced. “I wasn’t aware that Thailand had this rule,” she added.
Operating an online marketing agency and a beauty salon in Phuket, Janelle has cautioned fellow Brits to familiarize themselves with local driving regulations before renting a vehicle. She recounted her experience, noting, “I was in Phuket and parked across the road from the beach. It was the only parking space on the road. The fine was 2000 baht (£45), and my wheel was clamped; I had to go to the police station to pay the fine.”
She continued, “Driving abroad means there’s different rules than what there is in the UK. But apparently, this is also a law in the UK – but not one that people usually get fined for.” In the UK, Highway Code rule 239 states, “Do not park facing against the traffic flow,” with penalties ranging from fines to potential disqualification and imprisonment for violations.
