On May 8, 2026, a 24-year-old Nigerian national named Clinton Ubasinachi Ekechukwu was apprehended by tourist police in Phuket, Thailand, after an AI facial recognition system flagged him for overstaying his visa.
The authorities conducted a targeted operation in the Kathu district aimed at identifying foreigners suspected of immigration violations and other illegal activities in prominent tourist locations. Utilizing a Mobile AI Camera system installed in a patrol vehicle, police were able to screen individuals in real-time against a central database of foreign nationals whose visas have expired.
During this operation, the system indicated two men for overstaying their visas, with Ekechukwu being one of the individuals identified. Investigators revealed that he had initially entered Thailand under a 60-day visa exemption scheme but remained in the country well beyond his authorized stay.
Following his arrest, he was charged with being a foreign national who continued to reside in Thailand after his permitted stay had expired. He was subsequently taken to the Kathu Police Station, where legal proceedings and deportation processes were initiated.
According to tourist police, the implementation of facial recognition technology has enhanced their ability to identify individuals with expired immigration status in high-traffic visitor areas, where manual checks can be difficult to execute efficiently. This operation was part of a broader directive to intensify checks on overstayers and suspicious individuals in Phuket’s bustling tourist zones.
