BANGKOK, May 29, 2026 – Once accessible only through a challenging trek through unmarked jungle, Banana Beach on Phuket’s northwest coast has now secured its place as the sixth-best beach in the world. This prestigious ranking comes from TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards: Best of the Best Beaches, an accolade given to less than one percent of the platform’s eight million listings globally, based on an extraordinary volume of outstanding reviews over the past year.
The 2026 awards are grounded in a thorough analysis of millions of traveller reviews collected between late 2024 and late 2025, making them one of the most reliable indicators of visitor sentiment in the travel sector. The high praise for Banana Beach highlights its ability to offer a complete beach day experience, which includes activities such as snorkeling and diving among vibrant coral reefs, surfing, enjoying a beachside massage, and savoring food and drinks by the shore.
TripAdvisor’s editorial summary effectively conveys the beach’s appeal, noting its unique offerings. Notably, it features an underwater cliff formation known as the ‘Blue Wall,’ located about 45 meters off the shore, which draws a rich variety of marine life, including snappers, parrotfish, and reef sharks. The beach is particularly renowned for its clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, aligning it with some of the world’s top diving and snorkeling sites.
Banana Beach’s rise to fame also involves a strategic transformation. Recent improvements have included a large parking area replacing the old jungle entrance, new toilet and shower facilities, and a dual-ambience setup. One end of the beach features a lively beach club with numbered sunbeds, while the southern end retains a quieter, more traditional Phuket atmosphere with local Thai seafood offerings and bamboo seating. This dual approach caters to a wide range of travellers, from families to those seeking the charm of old Phuket.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive before 10 AM during the high season, which runs from November to April, to beat commercial tour groups and should bring cash for minimal parking and facility fees.
To understand the significance of Banana Beach’s sixth-place ranking, it is essential to consider its competitors. The 2026 global list is topped by Isla Pasion in Mexico, a private island near Cozumel, recognized for its pristine white sands and clear waters. Other notable beaches include Elafonissi Beach and Balos Lagoon in Greece, along with Eagle Beach in Aruba, and Praia da FalĂ©sia in Portugal. These beaches have established global reputations, making Banana Beach’s achievement even more remarkable.
In Asia, Banana Beach stands out as one of only two Southeast Asian beaches in the 2026 global top eighteen, alongside Kelingking Beach in Indonesia, ranked sixteenth. This recognition highlights the rising global status of Southeast Asia as a region with world-class coastal destinations.
Thailand’s coastlines extend over 3,200 kilometers and include more than 1,400 islands, providing a diverse range of beach experiences. Railay Beach in Krabi, accessible only by boat, is frequently praised for its stunning scenery. Maya Bay in the Phi Phi Islands, known for its role in the film The Beach, has reopened with strict environmental protections after a period of restoration. Koh Lipe, often likened to the Maldives, and the Similan Islands, a protected marine park, are also highly regarded by divers.
Additionally, beaches on the Gulf of Thailand, such as Koh Tao, are known for their shallow reefs and rich marine life, drawing divers from around the world. The variety of experiences available along Thailand’s coastline, from bustling beach clubs to secluded islands, sets the country apart as a leading beach destination.
Laurel Greatrix, TripAdvisor’s chief communications officer, emphasized that the awards are intended to assist travellers in making informed decisions based on the aggregated experiences of millions rather than the opinions of a select panel. Thus, Banana Beach’s sixth-place ranking is a testament to its appeal, pointing prospective travellers towards Thailand’s remarkable coastal offerings.
