Residents in Bangkok are being alerted to the possibility of elevated sea levels and flooding along the Chao Phraya River from May 17 to 21. This warning comes from City Hall, which has also indicated that saltwater intrusion is likely to intensify during this period.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) issued the alert on Saturday, attributing the potential flooding to the impact of prevailing southerly and southwesterly winds over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. These conditions are anticipated to elevate water levels at river mouths linked to the sea.
Particular attention is being drawn to low-lying neighborhoods along the Chao Phraya River, areas outside flood protection barriers, and major roadways like Sukhumvit, Suksawat, and Rama II, which are identified as particularly vulnerable.
Moreover, the BMA has cautioned that substantial saltwater intrusion during this timeframe could compromise water quality, affecting its suitability for drinking, household use, and agricultural purposes.
