In response to concerns regarding Ebola, Thailand has implemented stricter health measures, placing 11 travelers from high-risk nations under a 21-day monitoring period upon their arrival in Phuket. Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthavorn announced this decision during a meeting with local public health officials, emphasizing the need for vigilance given the province’s numerous international flights.
The individuals arrived at Phuket International Airport from countries identified as high-risk, specifically the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Governor Nirat confirmed that all 11 visitors are being observed in accordance with the protocols established by the Ministry of Public Health, noting that none of the travelers have exhibited any symptoms associated with the virus.
These monitored individuals are expected to return to their home countries gradually from May 28 to May 31. The governor also mentioned that enhanced screening measures could potentially decrease the number of arrivals from these high-risk areas, thanks to more proactive health checks.
Additionally, Suvarnabhumi International Airport has implemented further screening protocols. The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has set up a specialized screening counter for passengers arriving from risk regions, prior to their passage through immigration.
According to DDC spokesperson Jurai Wongsawat, passengers displaying symptoms will be directed to the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute for thorough examination and treatment. Those without symptoms will remain under close health observation for the duration of 21 days.
Health officials clarified that Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of infected individuals, contrasting it with airborne diseases like Covid-19 or measles. Most infections typically occur among family members, healthcare providers, or individuals who have had close interactions with infected patients or deceased persons.
Initial symptoms of Ebola can mimic other common illnesses, including high fever, fatigue, body aches, nausea, and vomiting, with some patients also experiencing abnormal bleeding. Authorities have cautioned that without appropriate treatment, Ebola can escalate and carry a high mortality rate.
