Maddy Barber, a former radio presenter and the founder of Madly Bespoke Jeweller, has a deep connection to Thailand, having lived and worked there for several years. A well-known voice on Singaporean radio, Barber has shifted her focus to storytelling through her jewelry, which has gained international acclaim over the past decade. Her brand has expanded from a local endeavor to a recognized name in markets such as Dubai and Munich.
Despite her career in jewelry, Barber’s passion for Thailand remains strong. She is particularly fond of Phuket, not for its bustling beach clubs, but for its serene natural landscapes. “I cherish being surrounded by green and nature, with coconut trees and banana trees, and the plantations that truly characterize the island,” she states.
When hosting friends visiting the island, Barber often takes them to Old Phuket Farm, an organic farm featuring paddy fields and buffaloes, ideal for breakfast or lunch. For a unique coffee experience, she recommends Timber Society, located within a rubber plantation, which offers a glamping resort atmosphere and private glass-dome tea rooms. Another favorite spot is Hideaway Cafe, nestled in the hills near the airport, known for its treetop ambiance and exceptional desserts.
Barber describes Nai Thon Beach as a magical getaway, featuring a wide expanse of soft sand and clear waters. Even during busy times, it retains a sense of solitude, devoid of crowded beach setups. For accommodations with a twist, she suggests Niran Farm, a combination of working farm and equestrian center, complete with a lakeside restaurant that overlooks the mountains.
Among her cherished local eateries is Prodepran Restaurant and Bar, subtly located behind an alley in a tourist area. Barber praises the Thai cuisine, especially the tom yum soup and the addictive deep-fried sticky rice popiah. For seafood lovers, HoiZapp Seafood in Si Sunthon is a must-visit, likening it to a local version of Jumbo Seafood. Barber also enjoys Bella Ciao Italian Bistro, a cozy establishment run by a couple, noted for its delightful Italian dishes.
For drinks at sunset, she recommends the Beach Restaurant by The Surin Phuket, best enjoyed with great Thai food. For stunning clifftop views, Talung Thai restaurant at Paresa Resort Phuket is a perfect choice. Lastly, Barber admits her guilty pleasure is visiting the Naka Night Market, particularly for the banana pancakes, while advising to hire a driver for convenience due to limited parking options.
