Visa has established a partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to propel the next stage of inbound tourism through its Visa Destinations initiative. This global program is designed to connect cardholders with unique, destination-focused experiences and offers, enhancing visitors’ navigation, spending, and overall experience in Thailand.
This collaboration signifies a mutual goal to fortify Thailand’s tourism framework, shifting the focus from solely increasing visitor numbers to ensuring enhanced confidence, accessibility, and enriching travel encounters that invite broader participation from various communities and destinations nationwide.
Visa Destinations supports this vision by addressing the complete tourist journey, from arrival and transportation to day-to-day expenditures and local exploration, supported by secure and widely accepted digital payment options. By collaborating with local merchants, the program aims to link visitors with specific local dining, shopping, wellness, accommodation, transport, and lifestyle experiences, while also bolstering local businesses.
Travel Demand Persists as Traveller Priorities Shift
Despite global economic and geopolitical uncertainties, travel demand in the Asia Pacific region remains robust. According to Visa’s data, travel is one of the largest consumer spending categories, with travelers opting to adjust their travel plans rather than cancel. Insights from Visa indicate a shift in traveler preferences toward shorter, intra-regional trips, flexible planning, and smoother everyday experiences such as secure payments and enhanced mobility. Spending is notably focused in well-connected areas like Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Samui, indicating the necessity of connectivity and access to varied experiences.
Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, remarked, “Tourism plays a critical role in Thailand’s economy and strength. The visitor experience is central to sustaining growth. TAT has launched initiatives such as the Krabi Prototype project, the CF-Hotels platform, STG Star, and the TTA award to better shape Thailand’s sustainable tourism. Collaborations with global entities like Visa help reinforce the tourism ecosystem, from infrastructure and connectivity to experiences that influence how visitors interact with Thailand.”
Thailand’s Enduring Strength as a Global Destination
Visa announced the rollout of its global, passion-driven travel program, Visa Destinations, in Asia Pacific, launching first in Thailand. As the inaugural country for Visa Destinations, it encompasses significant locations including Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Udon Thani, Samui, Hua Hin, and Hat Yai, showcasing the diverse experiences the country offers. Visa’s data reveals that Thailand remains the top destination in Southeast Asia, with inbound travel expected to recover strongly by 2025. Spending patterns indicate a shift toward higher value per visit compared to the pre-pandemic era, as travelers increasingly prioritize experiences and quality of stay.
Inbound tourism expenditure is primarily fueled by travelers from the Asia Pacific region, contributing over two-thirds of total inbound spending, while long-haul markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Europe maintain a steady demand. Key spending areas include accommodation, dining, retail shopping, healthcare, and local transport services.
Anthony Watson, Country Manager for Visa Thailand, stated, “Thailand’s appeal as a travel destination stems from its diversity, which ranges from globally renowned cities to culturally rich local communities. As travel expectations change, visitors are placing greater importance on confidence, reliability, and ease throughout their journey. Through our collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, we are facilitating more seamless and secure payment experiences while aiding local businesses in expanding their digital acceptance to better engage with international travelers and participate in the tourism economy.”
Feel So Thai at Song Wat: Bringing Visa Destinations to Life
Visa Destinations is exemplified through initiatives that connect travelers with local cultures and communities. A notable project in Thailand is the Song Wat Experience, which showcases Bangkok’s historic Song Wat district, celebrated for its heritage architecture, vibrant culinary scene, and burgeoning creative community.
By partnering with local merchants, this initiative promotes greater acceptance of digital payments, allowing visitors to explore the area effortlessly while helping small businesses reach international audiences and engage more fully in inbound tourism.
With Visa Destinations, incoming visitors to Thailand can look forward to:
– Enhanced arrival and mobility experiences, facilitated by secure digital payments.
– Simplified everyday spending across transport, services, dining, and shopping.
– Access to curated, destination-focused experiences, promoting intuitive discovery of local culture and communities.
– Increased confidence during their journey through trusted payment solutions that ensure ease and reliability.
– Deeper local engagement, fostering meaningful connections with places, people, and enterprises beyond standard tourist activities.
These benefits collectively support more confident and seamless travel experiences, reinforcing Thailand’s position as a destination that offers enduring value well beyond the visit itself.
